Cybersecurity at KSU: Training Professionals for Georgia and Beyond

Developing innovative ways of teaching our students is front and center at Kennesaw State. And while there are many important programs on our campuses, there is one that has become an effective combination of multiple disciplines throughout the university. The Institute for Cybersecurity Workforce Development (ICWD) reveals how KSU has become a nationwide leader in cybersecurity education.

The ICWD, which was formed to help encourage businesses and governments across the state to create cybersecurity jobs, has become an important part of Kennesaw State's efforts to lead in the field. The Institute created the B.S. in Cybersecurity, which brings together faculty expertise from the Coles College of Business, the College of Computing and Software Engineering and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The ICWD oversees the cybersecurity degree program, while also managing several key programs that allow students to interact with key members of the cybersecurity field.

Last month, Dr. Michael Whitman, professor of information security and assurance, was named executive director of the Institute. As one of the initial organizers of the ICWD and developers of the B.S. in Cybersecurity, as well as the executive director of the Center for Information Security Education, Dr. Whitman is a shining example of how to develop partnerships between the university and the business community. With a practical approach to the problems organizations face in cybersecurity, Dr. Whitman has provided ways for students to engage with businesses and find success.

Beyond networking with the industry, the efforts of the ICWD will continue to show the value of an interdisciplinary focus to education. Students are able to explore a full range of opportunities that combine some of the best Kennesaw State has to offer. As the program moves forward, I expect that multidisciplinary approach to grow as the industry itself changes. It's an exciting prospect to think about what Dr. Whitman and his team will accomplish.
