Think Pink on February 9

Each year, our women’s and men’s basketball teams join together in the Pink Day doubleheader, providing the Kennesaw State University community a wonderful opportunity to promote breast cancer awareness and to celebrate those who have bravely fought this horrible disease.

This year, Pink Day will carry special meaning as our women’s basketball coach, Agnus Berenato, has begun a fight of her own. In September, Coach Berenato disclosed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has already started treatment. A devoted coach and fierce competitor, she has refused to be sidelined by cancer. Let’s remind her that she is not alone in this fight or in her loyalty to KSU’s teams. On Feb. 9, against the New Jersey Institute of Technology, I encourage all KSU students, faculty, staff and alumni to throw their support behind Coach Berenato and our basketball teams by fulfilling her vision of a sold-out Convocation Center.

Coach Berenato is launching an endowed scholarship that will benefit a Kennesaw State student who has battled cancer in his or her lifetime. To reach their goal of $50,000, Kennesaw State basketball teams will be raising money for the endowment through a silent auction, T-shirt sales and donations leading up to Pink Day.

Thanks to our partners at WellStar, attendees will also be able to take advantage of wellness screenings and cancer informational stations throughout the building on game day. In addition, the game will feature a survivor walk to celebrate those who have defeated cancer or who are remembering loved ones who have suffered from it.

In 2019, the Susan G. Komen organization estimates that there will be more than 268,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women and more than 2,670 cases in men. I imagine many of you reading this know someone who has fought or is fighting a battle of their own. However, no one is in this fight alone. I hope you’ll take advantage of the resources made available to our campus community on Pink Day, and I hope you’ll all join me in cheering on Coach Berenato and our Owl basketball teams.
